Nelson, January 25

The nomination of candidates to represent the Cityiu the Assembly took place to-day. Messrs O. Curtis, D. Shephard, J. C. Richmond, J. Lightband, and M‘Gregor were proposed. The last-named gentleman withdrew. The show of hands was in favor of Messrs Curtis and Lightband. The proceedings lasted three and a half hours, but the attendance was reduced to a very small number before they closed. Mr Lightband was not present,' and was brought forward without his knowledge. At the nomination, Mr Shephard read telegrams which had passed between Mr Luckie, editor of the Colonist, and Dr Featherston, concerning a statement made by letter in Nelson that Dr Featherston had obtained for the General Government an offer of L 450,000 at 3i- per cent., which the Government did not accept because the banks would have got no commission. Dr Featherston admits the story so far as the offer of the . money and the refusal are concerned, but denies that the refusal was from consideration of the banks, but because the Government did not want the money.
