MR MACANDREW'S MEETING AT TOKOMAIRIRO.
To the Editor of the Evening Stay.
Si r,— My attention has been directed tq an articlq purporting to Ije g report qf Mr Macandrew’s meeting at Tokomairiro, in which my name is used in a way calculated to lead the public to think that I had acted unfairly by making “interruptions.” If challenging and proving several statements that were made by Mr Macaudrew to be perversions of the truth can be called interruptions, then in that sense I was guilty. One of his statements 1 had to remind him was a repetition of what he knew to be false, inasmuch as he had made the same statement before the Executive when documentary evidence was laid before him which satisfied him “that he had been misinformed.” The answer I got to the “ interruption” was—“lt might be so; he cou’d not say.” Mr Macaudrew stated that a friend of his had written to the Bruce Herald in his defence, but that they would not admit the letter. Mr Mackay, proprietor of the Herald , denied the statement, ar.d the meeting challenged Mr Macaudrew to name the writer. .He replied first that he would, but after consulting with the chairman he declined unless He got authority, which it appeared the chairman was unable or unwilling to give him. The result of the meeting, as stated by you, is also a total misrepresentation. Mr White, not Mr Houston, proposed a motion to the effect that a change in the Superintendency was absolutely necessary for the welfare and progress of Otago, ou which an amendment was moved. For the amendment so few hands, were held up that it was with the utmost difficulty that the chairman, Mr Goodall, could be got to put the original motion—in fact, Mr Macandf-pw Wps obliged fq th'h motiqu and ppt it tq the meeting condemnatory of himself, whiph was carried by an overwhelming majority. Three cheers were given for Mr Reid, which were kept np until the hall cleared, I am, flee., John L. Gillies. January 25,
