Auckland via Thames, Januarv 19. .

500 unemployed met last night under the auspices of the Working Men’s Protection League, and adopted a petition to the Superintendent, stating themselves to be in a condition of destitution approaching to starvation, and requesting employment. They adopted also a petition to the Legislature of Victoria, recpiestiug them to send a steamer to convey the unemployed and their families to that Colony, stating their willingness to re-pay half the passage money at a certain period after their lauding. To day, 200 unemployed assembled outside the Superintendent’s office, and sent a deputation to him, who returned after some time, reporting the Superintendent’s statement to be that be could give no employment until the present railway appropriations were adopted, which would be passed in a few days ; after which the work would be proceeded with as soon as possible. They were received with expressions of dissatisfaction. The meeting demanded to see the Superintendent outside. He refused, stating it was not dignified to address a disorderly mob. The crowd stormed the hall, and threatened to break into the Superintendent’s room. The Inspector and a posse of police cleared the building. The crowd proceeded to meet in the Volunteer Drill Shed, to consider further action in reference to a proposal to pull down the Provincial Council Chamber. Arrived —Lord Ashley.

Mr Brannigau is enlisting men for tlio defence of the Waikato, and 200 armed with Sniders for Taupo. January 20. The unemployed have, decided to petition the Provincial Council to-night, and meet again to-morrow. Tauranga, January 21. The Hon. Mr M ; Lean left at noon to-day for Maketu and the East Coast. Nga te Rangi is confident of the success of Mr M‘Lean’s mission. There is great disaffection ampngst the Arawas, owing to the adjournment of the Land Court’s sitting. Christchurch, January 21. The Interprovincial match commences on Monday, at 11 a.m. On their return home the Otago team will play a Timaru eleven.
