The Supposed Smolt.—The-fish mentioned by Mr Y. Fyke has been received, and although one of the Salraonidm, in several material developments differs from the smolt. It is intended to send it Home to Mr F. Buckland for identification of the species.

Political.—The Dunstan nomination for the Assembly takes place on the 31st, and the poll on the 7th prox. Mr Brough, Solicitor, Clyde, is the only candidate mentioned as yet. For the Provincial Council, Dr Niven is on the field, and Mr Caniby is likely to have a walk over at Cromwell. As to the Superintendency, the electors of the Dunstan district refrain from pledging themselves till they hear the speeches of both candidates. At Cromwell, by all accounts, the large majority of the voters are in favor of Mr Macandrew.

The Volunteers. The Hampden company, to the number of thirty-one men, were inspected by Colonel Harrington on Friday, and ’passed a really creditable inspection, the Colonel complimenting them on their favorable appearance, and on the steady manner they went through their movements, as a new company, On Saturday he inspected the Waikouaiti company, but complained of the poorness of the attendance. The company’s roll muster fifty men, but only twenty-seven turned out. There is, however, excuse that the notice given wai very short, and many of tbe men were engaged harvesting.

As will be seen by advertisement a meeting of the shareholders in the Water Works Company is called for to-morrow, at four o’clock.

Electors favorable to the return of M r 1). Reid as Superintendent are requested to meet in the Drill Shed, Caversham, tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at eight o’clock. A meeting of the City Youths’ Association will be held to.morrow evening, at half-past seven o’clock, when all members are requested to be present.
