NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES
Fuji the HOUSE OP REPRESBNTIVES,
At noon to-day the nomination took place of candidates to represent Doijedii.i in the General Assembly. The Returning officer, Mr Burnside, having read the writ and the advertisements in tin? D.a'd'l Tim/'* and Erenhiff Slur, convening the meeting, Mr J. Ghaiiam stepped forward and proposed Mr Smytliies. Mr James Hare seconded the nomination.
Mr Ml'-.RcEii proposed Mr W. H. Reynolds, and Mr Hkevks seconded the nomination.
Mr Prosser proposed Mr Bathgate, and was seconded hy Mr J. B. Thomson. Mr E. B. ('aki.h.i. propdred Mr J. Macassey, and Mr A- 11. 1 kk seconded tiie nomination.
Mi’Okokck. llowKt.i. pr.ipo ol Sir .1. G S. Guant. and was seconded by Mr T. H Snowden.' '
Mr James Hake proposed Mr John Graham, and the proposition was seconded by Mr Hunky Spears. After their nomination, the different candidates addressed the "meeting; but the length to which the proceedings were protracted prevents any attempt at reporting what was said.
At the conclusion of the speeches a show of hands was taken, but the proceeding was a farce, ” As usual, there was quite a forest pf hands held up for' Messrs Grant and Graham, not a few holding up both hands. It was all guess work, and the numbers, as declared by the returning officer, were as follow ’ ‘ Smythies (retired) , ... 0 Bathgatfi 1 ‘ ... ... ... 4'i Reynolds ... ... ... 33 Macassey ... 38 Grant 00 Graham ... ... ... ... 200 Mr Maca-sey demanded a poll, which will be taken on hriday nc^f.
