At a public meeting under the auspices of the Local Industry League, a resolution was carried condemning increased taxation on the necessaries of life. Hokitika, January 13. At the Circuit Court yesterday, William Kilner, indicted for a murderous assault on his wife with an axe, was found “ not guilty.” The verdict was against the evidence. The election of Mr Lahmann to the County Chairmanship has not given satisfaction. Public indignation meetings are being held in the country districts. Christchurch, January 14. The Hon. John Hall has been reelected to represent the district of Heath cote in the General. Assembly, without opposition. Nelson, January 13. The Airedale has arrived. There is no sign of the mail. All is quiet in the Waikato. Cobb’s coach arrived at New Plymouth late last night. The Hon. Mr Fox was a passenger. The road is reported to be bad. Thames, January 11. Mr T. Swan lias announced himself a candidate for re-election by the Thames constituency. Mr Charles O’Neill, late a Southern representative, is also a candidate, and Mr C. F. Mitchell, a member of the Mining Board,, is spoken of as a third candidate for the seat. The customs revenue at the port of Thames, for the quarter ended December 31, amounted to L 2,051, The new Catholic Bishop of New Zealand, Dr Crokc, addressed a large assembly last night, on the present condition of Ireland, and commented upon its improved state, iu consequence of the legislative of Mr Gladstone’s Government. At its close an address of welcome was presented to him from the Hibernian Society. The following returns are to hand to-day :— Morning Star, 80 tons, 195 ounces; Moanatiri, in the fortnight, ’l7l ounces ; New May Moon, 30 tons, 74 ounces; Golden Grown, 80 tons, 140 ounces. January 12, All idluvial goldfield is reported to have been discovered at Coromandel to-day near the new wharf and part of the old Rapanga Company’s ground. Half a pennyweight has been obtained to the dish, and numbers of claims have been worked out. The Duke of Edinburgh visits us in the Colonial Government’s steamer Luna on Friday.
