Christchurch, January 11
The nomination of candidates to represent City East in the General Assembly took place at noon to-day. Mr A. Duncan, ex-Mayor, and Mr E. J. Wakefield were nominated. The show of hands was in favor of Mr Duncan. Mr Wakefield demanded a poll, which Yvill be taken on the 18th iust.
Cecleno was committed for trial for wilful murder. Mr Rolleston will bo re-elected for Avon Yvitliout opposition. January 12.
Mr Wynn Williams and Mr E. Richardson were nominated for Christchurch West in the General Assembly to-day at noon. The show of hands was in favor of Mr Williams. Mr Richardson demanded a poll, which Yvill be taken on Thursday next. The funeral of the murdered girl, Margaret Burke, was largely attended. Wellington, January 11. Messrs Hunter and E. B. Pearce have accepted large requisitions to stand for the City. The candidates now are Messrs Richmond, Borlase, Hunter, and Pearce. Mr Plimmer, who is Mr Richmond’s chief supporter, tried to address the meeting on Tuesday night, but was hissed down. The shipping in harbor displayed their bunting to-day, in honor of Dr Featherston’s daughter’s marriage. Hokitika, January 12. At the Circuit Court, to-day, Margaret Quigley avas indicted for the murder of George Pateuaude, at Nobles, iu the Grey District. The jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter, and she yvus sentenced to four years’ penal servitude. David Souter, indited for the murder of Mary Ann Hamel, was found guilty on the capital charge, with a recommendation to mercy. He Yvas sentenced to death. The prisoner fainted on the floor of the Court. The Judge held out no hopes of his life being spared. Tauranga, January 12. The overland mail between the Thames and this place is a great success. The journey is accomplished in thirteen hours. The Ngaetirangi tribe refuse to visit the King. Peuetaka, chief of Pirirakau, visited Te Papa, and was much delighted with the reception he received from, the European settlers. He asserts that peace will continue throughout Taurauga.
