Queenstown, January 11

Mr Haughton’s meeting last night produced the greatest excitement. He delivered a very eloquent speech ; explained the Railway and Public Works Act; showed that the Southern Island received the greatest benefit; that the loan for Defence purposes would be the cheapest way of settling Native matters ; and repelled the attacks made upon him by the rival candidate, amid much disturbance from a compact party. He refused to meet Mr Shepherd.

Mr Hallensteiu, amidst great uproar, moved an amendment on the vote of confidence in' wild aud passionate terms.

Mr Manders was listened to with attention, and supported Mr Haughton. The Chairman said the vote in favor of Mr Haughton was carried on a close division.

Mr Shepherd afterwards attempted to address the meeting, when the lights were turned out. He afterwards spoke in the Town Hull until one o’clock this morning. The meeting was well attended.
