CALEDONIAN GATHERING.
The sports were concluded yesterday. There were between 2.300 an.l 3,000 persons present; and the following are the results of the principal games (Inciting (continued from first da\) : M'Ororie, first, LG ; F. Kerr, second, L 3. The 100 yards foot-race was a very exciting contest between Fairley and Pentecost, the dead heat resulting in favor of the latter, who takes the first prize of L 3. Peel of Tulloch : Brown, first; Haig, heavy hammer : A. M ‘Donald, first, L 3, SCft. 3in. ; Chalmers, second, LI, 79ft. Gin. ... There were five comuehtora for vaulting with the pole ; but the contest lay between Donnelly and Auld, prize-men last year; Muirhead, of whom it was expected that some good vaulting would be shown having to retire before Bft. was cleared. Donnelly cleared the bar without failing up to 9ft. 3m., when he made his first baulk, but ultimately succeeded in clearing ir At 9ft. 4in after repeated attempts, both men cleared the bar It then became necessary to bore fresh boles and the bar was raised to Oft. Gin., when after two attempts, Auld cleared it. Donnelly, failing to do so, took the second prize • but immediately after the termination of the game he cleared the bar. The vaulting this year was much superior to anywe have had here bctoie. Handicap hm die race, 220 yards, 2 foot hurdles : Shell, li st, L 4; Auld, second, LI. Sword dauce; Iloss, first, L 3 ; Brown, second, LI. Handicap walking race—first prize, Li ; second, LI. There were some five competitors. M aegregor at scratcli ; Eadie, 20 yards start • Thomson, Bathgate, and the others, '3O yards start. Maegregor came in an easy winner, Eadie being second. Distance, 2 miles; time, 16 min. 45 sec.—the shortest time it has been done on the ground. Wrestling, Cornish and Devonshire style : G. Robertson and B. Hoare, after wrestling for half au-hour without any result, agreed to divide the stakes. . Puttin' f the heavy stone —first pnze, L.'l; second, LL A. M‘Donald, first, 34ft. Chalmers, second, 31ft. lOin. Ha’f-mile handicap race—first prize, T 4; second, LI. This was easily won by Fairley, M. Murdoch being second. The first prize of L 3 for the Irish Jig was awarded to Hannigan, Haig taking the second of LI. While the wrestling was going on, the competitors at the school examination were brought in to the arena to receive their prizes. In presenting them, the 1 resident of the Society, said he bad witnessed the examination with pleasure, but bad been struck by the decided superiority of the girls over the boys. The number of competitors was much greater than last year, and he hoped the funds of the Society would so increase that it might be enabled to give large? pymess in futare. It was the intention of the Society to cultivate intellect as much as to encourage athletic sports, and be hoped it would soon be in a position to found Scholarships for the High School and bursaries for the University. It was very gratifying to himself (President), and to the directors of the Society, to find so much proficiency displayed. He con luded by staling that

The military authorities here are incrcasinij their severity ami cruelty towards the civil functionaries of the city. . General Von Der 'laon, in his official report to headquarters here, announces that in the battle before Orleans, on the 9th, he lost 42 officers and 809 men killed and wounded. The French admit their loss was 2()00. The recent firing from the guns of the Encicntc, at Paris, show that they have a greater range than was hitherto supposed. The shells of these gnus yesterday reached and demolished the German works beyond Ville d’Vvery.
