(from guevim,e’s tkleup.am company, lIEUTEII’.S AC ENTS.) Nelson, January 2. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced on Saturday, at about twenty minutes after midnight. A brilliant meteor, in the form of a comet, passed from the N.N.W. to S.S.E., apparently very low, and at about half-past eight o’clock last evening it burst like a rocket into numberless fragments on approaching the horizon. About fifteen minutes after there was a loud report, resembling the discharge of a ship’s broadside. Tokomairiro, January 3, The Caledonian Games yesterday were well attended, and were successful. The weather was line. Wellington, January 3. The Caledonian Gathering yesterday was a great success. The Colonial Treasurer left on Sunday evening for Auckland, eu route for England. With reference to the reported massacre at Waikato, the Jndepemient publishes the following telegrams : “ To the Editor of the Independent. “ Saturday, 3.30 p.m. “ The Government has telegraphic news from Auckland of the 27th, and there is no mention of the reported massacre. It must have taken much longer to get from Waikato via Mokau, and is therefore most probably untrue. “ (Signed) W. Fox.” “ Saturday, 3.40 p.m. “ 1 have nothing to report. The mail man from Taranaki has heard nothing. Blake knows nothing. “ (Signed) M. Noake. “ The Hon. W. Fox, Wellington.” “ Monday. “ State latest date from Thames and Auckland. Have you heard any news of the rumored massacre in Waikato ? “ (Signed) Donald M‘Lean. “ Mr Sheath, Tauranga.” '• Tauranga, Monday. “ The latest dates from the Thames and Auckland are up to 3 p.m. on the 27th December. All quiet in the district. I have heard nothing of the rumored massacre at Waikato. “ (Signed) J. Sheath, “ The Hon. D. M‘Lean.” Bluff, January 3, The Regatta to-day was a great success. The following took first prizes : —Cutter Race—Flying Scud. Open Sailing Boat Race—Elect. Five-oared Race —Greville’s telegraph boat.
