MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor, and J. Brown, Esq., J. P.) DRUNKENNESS. Henry Townsend was fined ss, and Wm. Mudic 10s ; Sophia Austin was fined 40s, or in default 14 days’ imprisonment. WIFE DESERTION. James Ashworth was charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife and children at Papanui. The Commissioner of Police stated that this was one of these awkward eases in which warrants had been issued for the apprehension of parties, when they were just about to be in a position to contribute to the support of their families. The defendant had been employed in the construction of a tail-race at Palmerston, and had just struck gold. Defendant denied that he had deserted his family, and stated that he had remitted money to them as soon as he was able. The case was remanded, to allow of any arrangement being come to. The charge against Frederick Hiscock was withdrawn.
