In a letter to tlie Melbourne Telegraph Dr Singleton made the appalling statement that, “ While the average modality of children in England per 1,000 deaths of all ages is G74 the same mortality in Victoria is above 500, while in some of Melbourne suburban boroughs it reaches 700, The death-rate for all ages for Melbourne and suburbs is above 30 per cent, higher than that of the remainder of Victoria.” In fact, the mortality among children is five times greater in Victoria than it is in England. Another freak of fashion has developed itself in Melbourne, and which is designated as the meanest yet. Some male exquisites have stained their hands with walnut juice, or some such pigment, in order to bring them to the honest color of the dicits of his Royal Highness the Duke of (idiuburgh. In the latter there is something suggestive of manly exposure—the colourable imitation is but fraudulent uuoleanness.
