The Duke of Edinburgh and the Governor returned from their tour today, The party visited Maketu, where they met with an enthusiastic reception. They also visited Taheld Lake, Taratuera hot springs, Whakarewavowera, Potomahaua, Ngahaupui. Kotokauki terraces, and Otukapurangi. The Maoris were enthusiastic everywhere, gave dances, aud made presents to the Prince. His Poyal Highness saw the chief, Tc Warn, and the forty Natives who surrendered recently. The Prince while in cam)) wore the Arawa costume —shawl <X la Maori—which greatly delighted the Natives. December 23. Te Warn, with twenty followers, is
still at Maketn. He is remaining there till the Government require his services. Auckland via Nelson, December 21. Private letters from Raglan state that the Hauhaus threaten to shoot the road party of engineers employed on the Government land. At an extensive wool sale yesterday, wool in grease fetched did to G-|d ; washed, 7d to 10^d. Millers quote Southern wheat at sa; flour, Ll4. Mr Shepherd addressed the electors at Queenstown yesterday. He reviewed egotistically his career in the Provincial Council, and his speech chiefly consisted of a tirade against the Eoeninc/ Star and Lah>, Wakatlp Mail , and other portions of the Press. He attacked Mr Haughton and other members savagely, and complained of members not co-operating with him. A practical joke was played. The town clock and town furniture were taken out of the hall, and placed before the Mayor’s store. The police have a clue to the offenders, who hold a good position.
The crops look magnificent. Gold is coming in freely. Mr Haughton has been well received. Shepherd is sanguine of success ; he challenged a citizen to fight him yesterday, Tauanaki via Nelson, December 22. Ihaia, it is reported, has gone to Waikato to tie up Todd’s murderers, after which he states that he will return and open up the goldfields of this Province.
