SCHOOL EXAMINATION.
The annual examination of the scholars attending the Middle District School was brought to a close to-day by the customary distribution of prizes. Tlic examination commenced on Monday, and was continued the following day, the examiners being the ilev. Mr Sutherland on the first day, and the Rev. Mr Stuart and Mr M‘Gregor of the Stuart street Academy on the second. Mr Hardy, secretary to the School Committee, was present throughout. The children were examined in all the branches of study, and although two days were occupied, it was not thought necessary to make a very extended examination, as it was only recently that Mr Hislop visited the school officially. It commenced with the class conducted by Miss Fisher, and terminated with the senior clashes. The attendance of visitors on both days was large, and very great interest was manifested in the proceedings. For the special subjects for which valuable prizes were given there were special examinations, and in respect of that for the prize given by Mr Hislop, jeweller, to the best mathematician, the examiners, Messrs Brent, M.A., and M‘Gregor, reported to the donors “ that the answers of the competitors manifested a very fair and creditable acquaintance with the work they have gone over during the season. Taking into account the abstract nature of the study and the youth of the pupils, their proficiency reflects great credit alike on themselves and their teacher. Two of them having in the oral examination appeared decidedly to the others, but nearly to each other were further subjected to a written examination. The result was that Chapman gained the prize, but Ids antagonist (Cohen) was so close at his heels that the examiners felt themselves called upon to recommend that if no second prize could be given, honorable mention of him should lie made. Tim very keenest rivalry appears to have been exhibited in nearly all eases, and no prize of importance Was carried off without a hal’d struggle. Mr Turnbull’s prize, a handsome gold watch, was only Avon by Eyre after a keen contest. The examiners reported A'ery favorably of the marked improvement slioAvn in all classes and congratulated the masters on their success. The school Avails were hung with specimens of Avriting and mapping, some of Avhich were highly creditable, and in the infants’ schoolroom there was a very good display cf needleAvork.
