MAYOR’S COURT.

This Day, (Before his "Worship the Mayor and Thomas Dick, Esq., J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. William Roberts alias George Smith was fined 10s, and Bridget Keane, an old offender, was fined 40s or three days. last night’s meeting, William Lloyd, an indiviclu ■ 1 iuscpa-ablc from noisy political meetings, was charged with having been guilty of conduct calculated to provoke a breach of the peace at the theatre last evening. The evidence of the police went to show that prisoner crea' cd a great disturbance by his conduct. Lloyd, who disclaimed all intention of interrupting the meeting, as on the cont-ary he was most anxious to obtain a bearing for Mr Yoge 1 , app icd for a remand to enable him to show that ho was not the person who had acted as stated by the police. His Worship said the Bench saw no necessity for adjourning the case. There could be no doubt of the fact that the prisoner was frequently given to offences of this sort. There were a great many men like him who adopted similar means when they wore anxious or rather determined that, while they should have ful freedom of speech in expressing their views, to deny that privilege to those to whom they had any objection. It was a groat pi y that these people diould act in that way to such an extent as they did in Dunedin.
