BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.

(fCOM GREVILLIi’s TELEGRAM. COMi’ANY, reuter’s agents.) Christchurch, December 9.

The following paragraph in the Oiayo Daily Times:, of December 6th, is utterly untrue. “According to the Lyttelton Times, it is expected (says the Oiayo Times) that at the general elections the country districts of Canterbury will return candidates opposed to the Dovcrnment policy.” Public feeling hero is quite the reverse. Hokitika, December 9. The County elections came off yesterday. Mr W. S. Reid and the Hon. J. A. Bonar were returned for Hokitika. The election was well contested, and great excitement prevailed during the I NViuu'AKO'lLL, December 9. The Southland members, with the exception of Mr Wilson, arrived to-

day. They were met at the railway ■station by a crowd. Messrs Tosslmck, Wood, and Kinross were received indignantly. An instant explanation was demanded for their vote against the enlargement of the boundaries. Their egress was intercepted until the demand was complied with. A written explanation was handed out by Mr Tosshack, and read aloud by Mr Wade, solicitor, It was immediately voted as unsatisfactory, and the denouncement that they were traitors and had sold the Province, was loudly cheered. Mr Wood assured them they did not know their friends, and denounced the “ lying telegrams ” which had been received. The reply, “ Deliver us from such friends ! ” was cheered. They left the station, and were howled and groaned amid cries of —“ How much did you get for your votes, traitors ! ” The Times leader this morning warned them of a hot reception, and written reasons were evidently prepared by them at the Bluff. The popular members were cheered lustily. The agricultural dinner last night was successful.

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day, to get Southland proclaimed into a land registry district.
