James Alexander, late postmaster at Kaipoi, pleaded guilty to two charges of embezzling two cheques of Lo each. He got an excellent character from the Chief Postmaster and the Deputy Commissioner of Stamps, who said he believed the defalcations arose more tlirough coofusion of accounts than dishonest intention. The prisoner was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment with hard labor.
Invercargill, December 7. Yesterday, at noon, a woman and two children, named Richardson, went to Seaward Bush, and have not since been heard of. A party of men have gone to scour the bush. Information was yesterday' received that the Southland members were defeated on the enlargement of the district boundaries. Great indignation is expressed. A petition to the Superintendent, in reference to the payment of the liabilities of the late Province, was forwarded by telegraph to-day. The weather is fine. Active preparations arc being made for the Agricultural Show to-morrow.
