BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.

(from greville’s telegram company, REUTERS AGENTS.)

Christchurch, November 24,

A message was read last night from the Superintendent stilting he had received a letter from the Superintendent of Otago in reference to the resolution passed by the Otago Provincial Council for the union of Canterbury and Otago. The message was read amid loud laughter. It comes on for consideration to-night on the motion of the Provincial Secretary.

The Hon. John Hall stated, in reference to the crisis, that the Superintendent would not say that Mr Oowlishaw’s use of the Superintendent’s information in his attack on the Government was unauthorised. The Executive thereupon thought to resign, but by pressure of a large majority of the Provincial Council had consented to retain their offices.

Mr Walker moves to-night “That the Council is of opinion no communication should be made to it by the Superintendent except through the ordinary constitutional channel.” This will be carried.

Mr Sawtell moves to-night “ That, in consideration of the important services rendered to the Province by Mr Moorhouse, the Superintendent be reqnested to place on the Supplementary Estimates the sum of L 2,500, as an honorarium on his retirement from public life, such sum to be spent in the purchase of waste lands of the Province.”

A fire occurred at the Pier Hotel, Kaiapoi, this morning ; but it was put out before much damage was done. It has been blowing a north-west gale during the last few clays. The continued drought creates uneasiness.

The Provincial Council voted L2OO in aid of the Acclimatisation Society, for the introduction of insectivorous birds.
