To Coi!respondents.—Tlio letters of “ Tsemo” and “Observer” will appear in our next issue. Telegraphic.—A station has been established at Waiinatc, in the Canterbury Province. Not to he Wondered At.—The Auckland police have received no pay for two months, and much grumbling prevails in consequence. Political. — A requisition is being got up in the Oamaru district, requesting the Hon. J. MM.lean to resign his scat in the Legislative Council and permit himself to be brought forward as a candidate for the representation of Oamaru in the House of Representatives.

A Healthy Sign.—The extent to which the bakes trade from Southland has increased of la’c maybe gathered Lom the fact that a mercantile firm on Riverton is experiencing considerable difficulty in obtaining teamsters on the following seemingly favorable terms A guarantee of 12 months constant work, at the rate of 10s per ton in advance of current rates, from Invercargill.

Gaol Return. —The following is the s'ate of II.M. Gaol, Dunedin, for the week ending the 19th November, IS7O Awaiting trial, 10 men, 1 woman; under remand, 0 men, 0 women ; penal servitude, 91 men, 0 women ; hard labor, 59 men, 14 women ; in default of bail, 2 men, 0 women ; debtors, 2 men total, 164 men, 15 women. Received during the week, 6 men, I woman ; discharged, 9 men, 2 women.

Tin-: Premier.— I ’The Wellington Independent of November 12 says “We may mention with regard to Mr Pox’s meetings at Rangatioki and Marston that they were remarkable for disclosing perfect unanimity ou the part of the audience, as both resolutions of confidence were passed unanimously. We have been informed by a gentleman present at the meeting at Marston, when the Premier explained the misrepresentations of certain journals, that everyone present seemed thoroughly satisfied, and that it is pretty certain there will be no opposition to his return.

The Incoming Suez Mail. The October Suez Mail, with detailed news up to October 16 and telegraphic advices up to November 2, is due at Melbourne on the 24th instant. The Rangitoto is advertised to leave Melbourne for New Zealand ports on the 23rd, via Hokitika, and, judging by experience, she will bring at least the mail nows. But as the Malta is this month the B. and 0. boat from Gaffe the probability is that the mail will reach Melbourne before its due date. In that ease, we may expeer, the Rangitoto to bring on the New Zealand portion.

Caituke oe a Prisoner.— The prisoner who was arrested at Hokitika on a charge of bigamy, and brought down in charge of a Ballarat detective by the Rangitoto on her last trip, and who escaped at the Bluff, has been captured. It appears that when he gob away from the steamer he concealed himself in the shrub, and defied the efforts of his pursuers to make him speak by the ordinary process of beating. The strategy of smoking out w'as next resorted to, and with effect, the fugative being forced to take the open once more. He was caught on the Bluff road, shortly after the Rangitoto sailed. Entertainment. — As was to be expected, the entertainment given in the Sooth District School last evening by the senior pupils, assisted by lady and gen demon amateurs, w r as the means of drawing together a crowded audience; MvH, Howovth, M. H. 8., occupied the chair. It would be invidious to particularise any of the performers, when all exerted themselves well, and with success ; but we cannot help remarking that the debate written by Mr Bark, in which the senior boys took part, went off even better than similar productions ou other occasions. The vocal portion of the entertainment w'as very good, many of the pieces being loudly applauded. We believe a very handsome sum has been realised for the object in view--viz., tho establishment of a fund for school prizes.

Hoad Engine. —The Hoad Engine imported by Mr -I. L. Gillies is not a very handsome looking affair, although it is exceedingly strong and \vcll put together. ■lt has two driving and a guide wheel. The driving wdieels are about.six feet in diameter, and the tiros eighteen inches wide. They are encircled wdth a baud of vulcanised Indiarubber, five in-hes in thickness, protected by a chain ou each side, bound together by a series of bars of Hat iron, about two inches apart. The J.ndiarubbor, as the wheel revolves, is pressed through these interstices, and takes hold of the ground, so as to prevent the wheel slipping round, ju-T as the frog of a horse’s foot descends between the heels of the shoe. There are two cylinders, and on each side in front are water tanka, which feed the boiler as the engine works. The guide wheel turns ou a strong pivot, ami is worked by a bevel wheel ami screw with considerable leverage, so that the engine may be turned with very little effort by the driver.

Brutal Attack..— On Monday afternoon, on the Waitahuua road, a brutal atta.k was made upon a man named Leslie, of Waitahumv, by a person named Daniel Ryan, also of Waitahuna, It appears that Leslie had been in Lawrence that day ou a court

case, and on returning home in a cart with his wife and family, Ryan, who had al-o been in Lawrence, and was the worse for liquor, overtook him. Excitable language parsed between them. Ryan would have Leslie to fight with him, and on Ids refusing to do so, he rais'd his whip purposely to bring the butt end of if, down upon Leslie, who however avoided the blow, which fell upon Mrs Leslie’s head, producing a frightful wound, and causing immediate unconsciousness. On Dr Stewart being sent for he found the skull to be slightly iraefured. The woman, however, is considered out of d mger. Ryan gave himself up to justice, and on Wednesday was admitted to bail, hdmelf in L2OO and two sureties of LIOO each.

Princess Theatre. —“ Everybody’s Friend,” a modern adaptation of the “ Goodnatured Man,” was playel last night to a thin attendance. We arc the more surprised at this, for on peeping into the Provincial Council Hall wo saw a pretty full attendance of listeners to speeches not half so good, half so much to the point, half so witty, nor half so pleasant t« think about. In the theatre there was refinement in language, elegance of dress (save where a colored sack coat was substituted for an evening dress coat), and Miss Carry George’s charming lady like representation of Mrs Swandown. Major Wellington do Boots was cleverly played by Mr Lawrence, and his domineering'lady by Mrs Bryer, while Mr Collier, Miss llavwnrd. Miss liushc, and Mr Metcalfe supported them ably as Mr and Mrs Fcatherly, Fanuy, and lechrook. With such a really attractive place of amusement as the theatre cue can but bo surprised that any one could be found willing even to be bored to listen to the dreary nonsense drawled out by some of our country members. To-night, the “ Home Wreck” will be given, in which Mr Walter Hill, whoso fame as a low comedian is Colonial, will make his first appearance as Tony Trotter. The Rev. Robert Scrimgeour will preach in Bt. Andrew’s Church, Melville Street, to-morrow morning and evening, at the usual hours. We notice that the p.s. Peninsula makes a special trip to Port Chalmers tomorrow, leaving the Did Jetty at 2.30 p.m., and returning at 4 30 p.m.
