THE QUEEN AND ROYAL FAMILY.
To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir,—The editor of the Otago Da'dg Tunes, in a local of his journal of this morning, stales:—“ The arrival of another Californian mail with later papers, will enable us to form a correct idea as to the degree of importance to he attached to this meeting’’—that is, the mooting of riffraff in Hyde Park on the Ilth September last. Through your courtesy 1 hope to enlighten the learned editor by the following extract from the Pall Mail Budget of September 16: “The magnificent ‘great Republican demonstration ’ which took place in Hyde Park on Saturday last, and was attended by no less than 120 persons, will probably alter the whole' course of events in France. It will frighten Prussia and comfort Paris. This meeting of the ‘-workmen of England’ was convened by Mr Odger and Mr Weston, for the purpose of adopting an address to the people of France. The proceedings did not exactly commence with prayer, but two costermongers recited a ‘ political catechism’ so exquisitely huau’iful in its language, that several copies of it at a halfpenny each found ready purchasers among the assembled workmen of England. Then Mi l Odger read the address. ” , , . “ Professor Eocsly then seconded the address. The learned Professor fully concurred in the abuse levelled at the late Emperor,
but ‘ thought it was no use abusing hun now.” He apjjeared, however, to think that some gooil might be gained by “ abusing Her Majesty the Queen, whose sojourn in the Highlands lie attributed to her desiring that there might not be too great facilities afforded for doing anything which might bo calculated to prejudice the position of her son in law.” I am, &c,, C‘ CKNEV. Dunedin, Nov. 17.
