Accident. —A seaman on board the ship Grace ' ibson, name;! .Arthur Page, received a compound fracture of the right leg through the falling of a bale. After being attended by Dr Drysdalo, he was conveyed to the hospital by steamer at noon. Thomson’s Eoad Engine.—A large number of possengers have visited the Government shed on the Rattray street jetty during yesterday and to-day, where the road steamer imported by Mr J. L. Gillies is being erected. The steamer, which is said to be able to draw 17.1 tons of goods at the average speed of five miles an hour, on an incline of 1 in 14, will be ready to proceed to Tokomairiro in the early part of next week. City Council. —At this afternoon’s meeting of the Council, the Mayor presided, and there were present—Councillors Jack, Barnes, Mercer, Walter, Mansfield, and Thoneman. The Under-Secretary wrote that section 23 block 48 was available for Corporation baths. On the motion of Mr Walter it was resolved to decline the offer, as the section offered was situated in the middle of the Ray, and totally unfitted for the purpose. As to the question of protecting property from overflow of the Water of Leith, the Under Secretary wrote intimating that the Ma.lborough Rivers Act provided for the conversion of river banks and added that prison labor was not available for this work. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Water Works Company, to the effect that so long as the Company received the Government guarantee, they could not supply Corporation baths with water gratuitously. An application by residents in Walker and Stafford avenues, that those streets might be taken over by the Corporation, was referred to the Works Committee. The Works Committee reported that the Surveyor had reported that it was impracticable to form a serviceable dray road from Princes st. up Dowling st. west; aud that the hill should therefore remain as it is. The Finance Committee reported that they had invited tenders for LIO.OOO worth of bonds, and had placed bonds in the hands of the Manager of the Bank of Otago to cover the existing overdraft, such bonds not to be negotiated without the Corporation receiving three months’ notice. Tenders for the reinstating of Clyde street Bridge, as follows :—Short and Thomson, LlB4 12s 8d ; H. M'Cormack, L 174 9s Id; Bateman and Staite, L23S); Crawshaw and Proctor, Llso 14s ; and tenders for the supply of horses and drays were referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. It was stated that there were h4 applications for the oflicc of Manure Depot Keeper. The mattev was referred to a committee.
