THE WAIKOUAITI ELECTION.
To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, — Allow me a small space in your paper to make a few remarks in explanation of what appeared in j our issue of Saturday) called “ A Saving Hint.” When addressing the Palmerston electors, 1 was accused of being connected with the present Government, and to refute that calumny I remarked somewhat as follows : “Gentlemen, you are all aware that Mr George Duncan is fond o’ the bawbees. Now M r George Duncan stated before 1 left town that, by , he would rather spend one hundred pounds than that I should go into the Provincial Council. Gentlemen, there is only one thing that 1 regret in connection with this affair, and that is, in my hurry in coming away I had not time to call on the Provincial Treasurer, and shew him how he could save fifty pounds and that was by giving me fifty pounds not to stand, instead of spending one hundred to keep me out.” The Palmerston electors were satisfied which you may see by their votes. I am, &c., A. R. Uke, Montecillo, 14th Nov,, 1870.
