Mr Ryrie was thrown from the box seat, the axle striking him, and the hind wheel passing over his body. Mrs Ryrie and the rest of the passengers were brought on to Milton. Great gloom was thrown over Balclutha on receipt of the melancholy intelligence, A large party was waiting to receive the newly-married couple. An inquest is being held to-day, at the Taieri Ferry, before the Coroner, Mr Be we. No particulars are to hand. There was a general holiday at Milton yesterday. The rifle match between ten married and ten single members of the Bruce Rifles, was won by the married, after an exciting contest, by one point. Afterwards athletic sports were engaged in. The Rifle Ball was held yesterday evening, forty couples being present. It passed off' well. To-day being a fast day, places of business are closed. Martin’s Bay. —We understand that in consequence of his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh having made arrangements to visit New Zealand a month earlier than anticipated, the Provincial Government has been disappointed in not obtaining the promised assistance of the steamer Luna to go round to Martin’s Bay. We are informed that a very handsome bonus was offend to the owners of any steamer willing that she should make a special trip, but that no one will accept the offer unless on condition of going through Cook’s .Straits. It seems singular that with so many steamers so little enterpnsa is evinced as to prevent us going direct to our own settlement instead of going roun'! the island to get to Martin’s Bay. City Council. —A special meeting of the City Council to consider matters relating to the Princes street reserve was held this afternoon at which there were present the Mayor, Councillors Barnes, Cargill (during a portion of the meeting), Mercer, Thoneman, Walter. After considerable discussion it was resolved upon the casting vote ef the Mayor, that the rents of the reserve for the past and future commence at 35s per foot, and be reduced by a sliding scale to 16s ; that the rents be collected in instalments—a third in cash and the remaining two-thirds in three and six mouths guaranteed bills. The Council was left sitting. The Otago University.—We understand that the gentlemen in Scotland who were requested by the Presbyterian Church trustees here to select a Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy for the University of Otago, have appointed a Mr Macgregor to the office. It would appear that either th letters containing full paiticulats of the ;ip pointment have been miscarried or that, they have been forwarded by the San Francisco route, as the intelligence to hand merely alludes to the fact of Mr Macgregor having received the appointment. St. Paul’s Church. —The gift auction in behalf of St. Paul’s Church commences at the Masonic Hall this evening, at 7 o’clock. The goods that will be offered for sale arc of a diversified character, and auctioneers have volunteered assistance in disposing of them
them. In order that justice may he done to the liberality of the doners of the numerous articles to be submitted for sale, we arc requested to invite all members of the congregation and friends to attend.
