The Australian Mutual Provident Society has established a branch here. Mr Collie is here, and will remain for some time. A requisition to the Hon. Mr Gisborne, to stand for Parnell, is being signed. Christchurch, November 9. The Agricultural Show to-day was a great success in all the departments, especially the implements. The -weather was beautiful. The Flower Show was also a great success, considering the earliness of the season. Over LI-300 has been subscribed hero for the sufferers by the Lyttelton fire. The Society of Saint Vincent De Paul give a concert to-night in aid of the fund. There was universal grumbling yesterday at the postponement of the races. November 10. There wore 100 more entries at the Agricultural Show this year than last. The receipts at the gates amounted to L 307 3s 6. The cattle were admitted by competent judges to be the best ever seen in the Colony. The horses were not equal to those of Otago. The agricultural dinner was largely attended. Messrs Moorhouse, Rolleston, and the Hon. J. Hall wore among the speakers. A large and iuJluentially signed requisition will be presented to Mr Reeves of the Lyttelton Times to-day, asking him to stand for Selwyn, in opposition to Mr Stevens.
Tho St. Vincent De Paul concert, for the benefit of the sufferers by the Lyttelton fire, was crowded. Tho weather is beautiful, and a fine day’s racing is expected.
.Peeress and Southern Chief are equal favorites for the Handicap. Envy is favorite for the Derby. Young Austin won the ten mile race easily yesterday. Shell had 600 yards start, but gave in after having done less than six miles in 38 minutes, Pentecost, with GO yards start, retired after running 700 yards.
Hokitika, November 9. At the firing for Captain Bonar’s cup Volunteer Skene was the successful competitor, scoring 55. This being the third time of his winning the cup, it now becomes his property. The firing was fair. The next highest scores were 49 and 48. * . I—rn-
