The number of entries received for the agricultural show is 506, being 106 more than last year. It is expected to be a great success. Business is almost entirely suspended, owing to the races. The holiday will last all the week. The amount of subscriptions to the Fire Belief Fund is L 1,321, Several lists are yet to come in. Wildboy has been scratched for all his engagements at the Metropolitan Meeting. Mr E. C. J. Stevens comes forward for Selwyn district in the House of Representatives, in compliance with a numerously signed requisition. A fire broke out on Friday morning in an unoccupied house on the Windmill road. The house was burnt down. Three men were sleeping in the house the night previous. Some suspicious circumstances are rumored, and an investigation will take place. A ten mile pedestrian race comes oil on Wednesday between Young Austin, the New South Wales champion, and several local pedestrians, for a silver cup. A review and sham fight between the volunteers takes place on Wednesday morning, in honor of the Prince of Wales’s birthday. A large number of entries have been made for the prizes offered by the Canterbury Flax Association. Dr Haast starts for the Malvern Coal Fields to-day to make a thorough investigation on behalf of the General Government. COMMERCIAL. Grain Market.—Wheat; Some lines changed hands at Is 3d, but 4s 6d is asked for that in store ; holders firm. Flour dull at LI2. Oats (potatoe), 2s fid to 2s 8d; tarbirian, 2s 3d to 2s Id. Barley little enquired for. Stock Market. First-class beef, 30s per lOOlbs; medium to good, 25s to 27s fid. Sheep: Cross-bred wethers (shorn), 20s 2d per lOOlbs; store sheep in good demand. Horses ; Light draught, L2O to L3O ; hacks, Ll7 to L 24. The Rangitoto and Taranaki sail for Dunedin to-day.
