(from oreville’s telegram company, reuter’s agents.) Auckland via Wanganui, November 1. The Hon. Mr Vogel addresses the electors of Auckland (City East) tonight. He received a deputation from the Thames respecting water works. During the discussion he ascribed the depression at the Thames to the absence of public works. The Thames representatives are to take measures in the Provincial Council to request the Government to expend a portion of the sum appropriated for water works ou goldfields on the Thames. Mr Vogel visited the Thames and received several deputations. He addressed a public meeting, which passed a resolution approving of the Government policy. The Provincial Council was opened by the Superintendent in a speech in ■which he complained that the General Government had opposed measures for the benefit of the Provinces. The Southern Cross replied in a three column leader, condemning the speech as being disingenous. In a debate on the Busby land claim the Council condemned the action of the Superintendent in extinguishing the land claim by a money compensation. The Provincial Secretary intimated that he considered it a Government question. The debate will be continued to-day, and will probably result in the defeat of the Government, The Bank of Now Zealand’s half yearly dividend is at the rate of 10 per cent., with 5s bonus. The news of the fire at Lyttelton caused great excitement here. Arrived —Asterope, from London ; Strathnavar, from Lyttelton ; Banshee. Sailed—Hero and Constance for Sydney. Southern wheat is quoted at 5s Gd ; oats, 3s Id; flour. LII 10s; barley, 3s. Spit, Napier, November 3. The anniversary of the Province was celebrated on Tuesday by cricket matches, picnics, balls, etc., and passed off successfully. At the Meanee Races yesterday, a man named O’Donuel], while intoxicated and riding furiously on the course, came into collision with Mr Palmer, late mate of the Luna. Both were thrown to the ground—O’Donnell’s horse being killed, and Palmer severely injured in the face, but he is now doing well. O’Donnell is still insensible. Several other serious accidents occurred, Taranaki via Nelson, November 3. The erection of the telegraph be- : tween Wanganui and Taranaki is to be commenced forthwith. Tamati Teito held a meeting last week, at which 200 Natives were present. The result of the meeting was favorable, Tamati says fighting is at an end. The Provincial Council has adjourned , for a fortnight. The members refuse to do business until the Superintendent takes a seat in the Council. Mr Vogel was asked to stand for Now Plymouth, but declined as he has accepted an Auckland requisition. Mr Kelly, M.H.R., holds a meeting of his constituents ou the 12th.
