MR BATHGATE IN REPLY.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sib—There are two ways of conducting a contesf in politics—-one to dispute th« views of your opponent, and the other to pitch into him personally. The latter is the mode adopted by the mean and ungenerous. Youi* correspondent “Pharisee,” has given us a jumble of both systems of attack. His nom de plume is well chosen, as he seems to be very bilious, a very sour Pharisee. In so far as he goes into my private affairs, he is guilty of an act of baseness, and in this he will have no sympathy with the electors of Dunedin. He will defeat his end. Nomau of sound principle, no honest politican, will ever adopt the assassin-like practice of stabbing his opponent under cover of an anonymous letter. If our sour “Pharisee” has anything to say against me personally, let him speak out like a man in the face of day, and give me an opportunity to defend myself. I am content to leave my fellow-citi-zens to decide betwixt us. Then, this acid and acrid gentleman has not courage to make a distinct charge. His letter teems with what logicians call suggestio falsi. He lies infei entially. He attempts to disprove my figures, and here he is equally disingenuous. One instance will serve. I quoted the appropriation for immigration purposes at L 14,000. He states it is only L 12,000, How does it stand in the Ordinance ? I read it thus; Home agency £I,OOO Immigration ... ... 12,000 Immigration agent ... 1,000 Total £14,000 Who is right,,my venemous one—you or I? To save further correspondence, I invite him to attend my meeting this evefling, where I will meet him face to face/n.l? 1 do not mistake I will then learn that the cause of his enmity is,-that Iqnce did him a favor. I am, &c. ; John Bathgate.
