WIDOWS AND ORPHANS.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —I have been much surprised tint the committees now raising funds for the relief of the widows and orphans of the slain soldiers belonging to the French and Prussian armies, have' not adopted sonic plan by which every man in the Colony could make some small offering in behalf of these poor widows and orphans. There are few people in the Colonies but who have a sympathy with either one side or the other, and there cannot be a doubt that everyoi e has a lively sympathy with the poor wives and children of both sides ; for where suffering women and children are concerned, we, as colonists, cannot havo any feeling which would make us have a preference for either side. I feci certain that if a plan similar to that adopted for the Lancashire Relief Fund was set on' foot, that nearly every man, woman, and child would subscribe a little. No doubt something similar will be done in the other Colonies; and if the subscriptionsj were small, when the subscribers number millions the amount would soon run up. Yours, &c., Cosmopolitan.
