Rainy Days, — We gather the following information with regard to rainy weather in the chief places of Now Zealand from the Meteorological observations for the month of August:—The number of days on which rain fell were—Auckland, 30; Wellington, 23 ; Dunedin, 22 ; Taranaki, 28 ; Nelson, 11; Christchurch, 10; Hokitika, 13 ; Southland, 9. Murder and Suicide. —At Hokitika, last week, a coroner’s inquest was held on the body of Mary Ann Hammill, who died from the effects of injuries inflicted upon her by David Souter, a man with whom she had been cohabiting. A verdict of wilful murder was returned. During the progress of the inquest a man named John Dawkins was conlined in Hokitika gaol for drunkeni ess. The fate of the woman Souter, with whom he had at one time cohabited, preyed so much on his miud that he hung himself by a strap to a window of the cell.
