Resident Magistrate’s Court.— The only case called this morning was a charge of assault; but neither prosecutor nor defendant appeared. Telegraphic.—A telegraph station is to be erected at Woodlands, in the vicinity of the meat preserving company’s works, and no doubt ere very long the three establishments of the company, afc Kakauui, Washdyke, and Timaru, will be placed within telegraphic communication of each other. Rapid Travelling. —We learn from a private source that the steamer Luna, dining a recent voyage performed the distance from Wellington to Onehunga in thirty-five hours from wharf to wharf. This our correspondent says truly is a novelty in “New Zealand North Island coasting.” Magisterial. —The appointment of Mr T. Birch to the office of Itcsidcnt Magistrate, during his mayoralty, was contingent upon the retention of that office, and when he ceased to be Mayor, he ceased to be a Magistrate. We are glad to learn that his public services have been recognised by the Governor, and that by the last Gazelle he is created J.P, for the Colony. Rainy Days, — We gather the following information with regard to rainy weather in the chief places of Now Zealand from the Meteorological observations for the month of August:—The number of days on which rain fell were—Auckland, 30; Wellington, 23 ; Dunedin, 22 ; Taranaki, 28 ; Nelson, 11; Christchurch, 10; Hokitika, 13 ; Southland, 9. Murder and Suicide. —At Hokitika, last week, a coroner’s inquest was held on the body of Mary Ann Hammill, who died from the effects of injuries inflicted upon her by David Souter, a man with whom she had been cohabiting. A verdict of wilful murder was returned. During the progress of the inquest a man named John Dawkins was conlined in Hokitika gaol for drunkeni ess. The fate of the woman Souter, with whom he had at one time cohabited, preyed so much on his miud that he hung himself by a strap to a window of the cell.
