IMMIGRATION.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sir, —We have read in the public papers much about immigration, and the great benefit the country was to derive from it. How comes it that we have so many idle in a small community like this ? I wonder, sir, if ever it enters into the heafis of our legis; lators what is to become of the rising generation. They are rapidly increasing in number, and when educated, they cannot all fill offices under Government. It therefore becomes every man’s duty wdio is the father of a family to see that his children are placed in a fair way of getting an honest living, thereby helping to make them respectable members of society. Well, sir, there are industries that could be worked with benefit to the State, and profitably to those connected with their maniifactm-e, provided there was a slight alteration in the tariff, in order to give them a chance to compete with the Home market. There is the manufacture of cabinet furniture almost at a standstill through importation. Now, sir, supposing that 10 per cent, on the invoice price was charged, it would be paying for value received, and not as at present, where all valuables come in bulk at a trifling import duty per foot. The system has ■worked well in the neighboring Colo lies, and has been the means of giving employment to hundrels of men and keeping the money in their midst, while conferring a great benefit on the whole community. I am, &c., I.IVK AND LKT LIVK. Dunedin, October 13.
