A Rich Newspaper Hoax. —Some months ago the publishers of the Paris Figaro practised a hoax upon the public, which showed a good knowledge of Parisian nature. They left a column of the paper entirely blank, with the explanation that upon this apparently white space was printed in sympathetic ink matter unfit for ladies to read, but which could be rendered legible by pressing the paper with a hot iron. Thousands bought the paper to see what this indecent matter was;, blit the of heat faife'd to bring anything to view. In fact, there was nothing there at all. Bankruptcy Fees. Under the heading of “The Loafer on the Street,” a writer in the Canterbury Weekly Press says —“ As soon as I can borrow sufficient money to pay' for a special advertisement I intend to summon a meeting of my brother loafers to consider the cruelty of the recent changes in the bankruptcy foes. Instead of paying 9s, as formerly, you now pay LB. It’s positively ludicrou The idea of any one declaring himself insolvent that has L 8 in ready money. Why I should look upon that as perfect affluence. The only result will be that, instead of small swindles, men will go in f r big ones now. Unless you do your creditors out of L 75, it doesn’t pay to trouble the Bankruptcy Court. It’s the merest question of bank interest, 12 per cent. Talking of bankruptcy, did you see the Aurora Australis the other night? In olden times, such unusual phenomena were usually considered as portents of evil; whilst watching the crimson rays of the Aurora radiating through the the crmilean sky, I suddenly felt a strong presentment that my landlord would demand payment of liis account the following day. I had a further presentment that I wouldn’t be able to nay him; both these presentments came true.
