MAYOR’S COURT.
Ibis Day, (Before his Worship the Mayor, and the Hon. Dr. Buchanan, J.P.) DRUNKENNESS, Hugh Johnston, having been several times previously convicted of this offence, was sentenced to 7 days imprisonment as an habitual drunkard, CHARGE OF BESTIALITY. James Hutchinson, brought up on this charge, on the information of detective Farrell, was remanded until Saturday. ABUSIVE LANGUAGE. Samuel Powell was charged with using abusive language in the Provincial Sale Yard ( on the 10th inst., calculated to provoke a breach of the’ peace. Mr Slessingcr, who prosecuted, sta ed that in consideration of the defendant having promised never to annoy him again, he did not wish to press the charge. His Worship, however, said that such an offence could not be entirely overlooked, as society would not In safe it such were the case. Witness then stated that on the afternoon of the 10th inst. at about 3 o’clock, he entered the Provincial Sale Yard, when defendant came up to him auej. abused him in a most disgusting and uncalled'for way, using language‘scarcely fij; to bo repeated. Witness had never to his
knowledge given him cause for offence, an 1 was at a loss to conceive why he should nave been subjected to annoyances from the defendant for the last swen or eight years. In answer to his Worship, the defendant admitted the offence, and said he was very sorry it had occurred, but that he was under the influence of drink at the time. He was not aware of having used threatening language to anyone. Mr Slessingcr did not wish to press the charge, as he had defendant had a wife and family. The Bench fined the defendant 20s and costs, or seven days imprisonment; stating that the penalty would have be n much heavier, but for the kindness of the prosecutor. Another information charging the defendant with a broach of the peace, was withdrawn, on the defendant promising to be more careful in the future.
