THE VOLUNTEERS.

RIFLE MATCHES. The rifle match between the Honorable the Artillery Company of London and the Dunedin A? tillory was fired off by the latter on Saturday last, at the Pelitehet Bay Butts. The weather, though fine, was most unfavorable for rifle shooting, owing to t’-e strong N.E. wind blowing during the afternoon, and which came in violent gusts from the hills, rendering good shooting almost an impossibility. The conditions were—ten men a-side ; ranges, 200, 500, and GOO yds. ; position, Hythe throughout ; Wunhleton targets ; Government rifies and ammunition ; seven shots .at each distance ; no sighting shots or signalling of misses allowed. The following are the scores :

Average—4s.9 The Artillery will, on Saturday, the 15th inst., lire another ride match against the Greymouth Rides, upon the following conditions, viz.—dve shots at ranges of 400, 500, and 000 yards ; Hythe targets ; any position; Government rides and ammunition. Should the weather prove favorable, some good shooting maybe expected, as both companies possess some first-class shots. The following are the names of the Artillery team, viz.—Captain M'Farland, Sergeants Muir and Smith, Corporal Ogilvie, and Gunners Lambert, Reid, Turton, Pell, Hislop, and Fulton. The Greymouth team is composed of Privates Smith, Johnston, Osborne, anti Simmons; Corporals Moss, Butt, and W. S. Smith ; honorary Surgeon Morice, and Sergeant Thomas. A match has been arranged between the Port Chalmers Naval Brigade and the Greymouth Volunteers. We are not aware when it is to be fired.
