Rarotonga, and the Savage Islands. She brings Air and Mrs Cosh and family to Auckland, who have left Fate on account of Mrs Cosh’s health. Air Cosh is to occupy Mr Bruce’s pulpit in Auckland, that gentleman being on bis way home. Air Al'Nair, of Erromanga, died suddenly on the 16th September,

Our J.Ps.—lt is worthy of note that the office of J.P. is not considered a mere empty honor with most of those who have been appointed in Dunedin. In looking over the list and comparing the names of those who have shared in the duties of the Alayor’s Court since its establishment, no less than twenty-seven out of thirty-seven, who live within easy distances of tho Court, have taken their seats on the bench in their turns. It is a good sign when members of a community are willing to give some portion of their time to tho public sc vice. They deserve public thanks ; but their conduct is a condemnation of those who, with equal responsibility, are content to wear the honor without doing the work.

Fire Brigade. —The annual torchlight procession and supper of the Volunteer Fire Brigade took place last night. The beautiful evening attracted crowds of spectators, and the demonstration was accompanied by the A 7 oluntcer Band, under the direction'of Air Martin. The supper was provided by Air Robert Murray, and was put on the table in his usual liberal style, (.'apt. Wain presided, and the Alayor, Air T. Birch, M.H.K., Messrs Elliott, Jack, W. O. Ball, and several other gentlemen were present as guests. In acknowledging the various toasts some very pleasant reminiscences were recalled, and the present efficient state of the Brigade was favorably remarked upon. It having been stated that additions to the library were needed, Air Elliott liberally promised five guineas as a contribution from the Insurance' Company that he represented ; Air Jack and Air Ball also intimating that they, too, would contribute, and the Mayor engaging to add five guineas to the library fund on condition that a like sum was contributed by the Corporation. No one can entertain a doubt that that sum, if not a much larger one, will be voted by the City Council, and we are convinced that no contribution will be haded with grearer satisfaction by the inhabitants of the City. The evening was spent most pleasantly. The speeches were fully up to the average on such occasions, and were interspersed with songs and recitations.

Otago University. —At the adjourned meeting of the Council of the Otago University, no reply having been received to the message transmitted, the Council proceeded with the appointment of professors, and passed the following resolution “No satisfactory reply having been yet received from tho Colonial Government to tho requirements of this Council, such as will permit of tho amalgamation being immediately proceeded with, Res lived, that the Council proceed to the election of Professors of classics and English language and literature, and of Alathematics aud Natural Philosophy. 1. The Princess Theatre. —This place of amusement, that has been so long closed, will be re-opened on Wednesday evening AVc have before noticed tho alterations and improvements that the management are making in the building. Ecpial efforts have been made in cu .aging a strong company, and as far as we can ascertain, with success. Although most of those engaged are wellknown in the neighboring Colonies, they arc strangers to Dunedin. Air Lawrence has played with great success throughout Australia. We need only mention that he was induced to visit the Colonics by Air George Coppin, whose judgment is too clear to bring out an actor without merit. Miss Carry George, though young, has achieved a high reputation for ability. Since leaving London, she visited Alelbonrne, Sydney, Adelaide, ami other Australian cities. She will be wtdl supported by Aliss Edouin Brycr, who has had considerable experience in India, China, and the Colonies. Alisa Lizzie Bushc, formerly of the Royal Hay market and Princess Theatre, London ; Aliss Jnl a Harwood, well-known in Sydney, Adelaide, aud London, and Aliss M. Willis, who needs no recommendation from us, form part of the cqrps i/rainct/ii/iie. Then we have Air Collier, wh<? stymes in comedy and Shakesperian characters $ Alp whoso forte also is light comedy, and v/ho Ijss played with great success in Alelhourue, Sydney, and Adelaide ; Air Alusgrave, an immense favorite at Bendigo and Ballarat, who has been playing at Auckland, and Air and Airs W. Hill, arc expected. AVc only express the general satisfaction that will he felt that AI. Fleury will have charge of the orchestra, and will be assisted by Alessrs Rcichardc and Martin.
