THE SUPERINTENDENT’S DINNER.

To the Editor of the Evenino Star. Sir, — On Monday last I addressed a letter to the Daily Timet, in reply to their reporter’s letter. The reply not having been published, and considering that the Committee may expect at my hands a further explanation, I hope you will find space in your columns to publish a copy, which 1 enclose. I am, yours, k c., Will S. Douglass Sept. 29, IS7O. [Copy ] “ To the Editor of the Daily Tunes. “ Sir,—l feel rather surprised at your reporter’s letter excusing his non-attendance to report the proceedings at the dinner to his Honor the Superintendent. “As an excuse to the Committee, it may, if they arc satisfied, be good ; as an excuse to the public it will not bear examination. “ The points involved are—First, my duty as Secretary to the Committee; and secondly, the duty of the Daily Times to the public. On the first point 1 positively affirm that the ticket was delivered by me to a clerk in the Times office between five and a quarter-past five o’clock; and if your reporter, as he states, waited until six o’clock had struck, the fault must be with the arrangements cf your office, and not with me. Secondly, I have yet to learn that the Daily Times or any other newspaper has any right to claim that a ticket shall be presented as a condition of it-, reporting proceedings. “ It was more the interest of the Daily Times to report the proceedings for public information, than it was for the Committee to have them reported ; and if your paper bad been anxious to present the report, it was very easy to obtain a ticket by paying the money—a course which would have been more dignified thau accepting a ticket, considering the tone the Daily Times has assumed in the matter. “ I think that the Daily Times, instead of attempting to defend its misconduct, owes an apology to the Committee, who did not neglect that courtesy which they claim, and to the public, who expected a full report at their hands. “ I am, kc,, “(>igned) WillS. Douglas.”
