MAYOR'S COURT.

This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor, and Henry Driver, Esq., J.P.) DRUNKARDS. A M‘Donald, for being drunk, was fined ss; W. M'Ghee, ss; H. Johnston, ss; and M‘Lanchlan, ss; each with the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment. FIGHTING IK THE STREETS. Henry Pearce was charged by Sergeant Baxter with striking a man named Harris, in Stafford street, so heavily as to cause insensibility. The sergeant said that about six o’clock yesterday evening he witnessed Harris and the prisoner fighting. Before he could reach them he saw Harris knocked down by the prisoner, who trie I to make his escape by. running into the house of a prostitute with whom he cohabited. He followed and arrested him after some difficulty. The officer’s evidence was confirmed by a witness. The prisoner, who had been several times convicted, was fined LlO, or three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. He was further charged with obstructing the officer in the execution of his duty. Sergeant Baxter stated that when arrested he struggled violently, and tried to kick, bite, and tear bis uniform. The charge was substantiated by a young man who witnessed his conduct, and ho was lined in a further sum of LlO, or three months' imprisonment. The sentences to be cumulative. John Kidd was charged on the information of Sergeant Baxter with aiding the last named prisoner to escape from arrest, and with assaulting him in the exccut on of his duty. From the evidence it appeared that, under pretence of proffering his services to assist the sergeant, he induced him to release the prisoner Pearce from his hold, when both attacked him. Ho then arrested hath of them. The prisoner was fined L 5, or 14 days’ imprisonment. CHARGE OF STEALING TOBACCO. Three men, E. M‘Carthy, John Hamilton, and Peter Johnson, were charged with stealing a box of tobacco fr.uu the shop door of Messrs Hogg and Hatton yesterday. They were remanded to Thursday.
