(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Wellington, September 1. The Waste Lands Committee reported yesterday on the Tuapeka, Mount Benger, Blacks, and Manuherikia petitions to the following effect: — “That this Committee are of opinion that the only satisfactory remedy that can be devised for the evil complained of by the residents of the various goldfields in the Otago Province, is the adoption of the principle of free selection in the disposition of waste lands.”

Francis Harris, late Provincial SubTreasurer at the West Coast, was brought before the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged with embezzling monies to the amount of L 1,230. Further deficiencies are expected to be discovered. The Provincial Auditor’s evidence was taken, and the prisoner Avas remanded for a Aveek, in order to obtain evidence from Westport.
