THE CLYDE ROBBERY.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sin, —I have read with considerable pain your article on the gold robbery, and consider the observations therein contained reflect in a most unfair manner on the officer in charge. In the first place, I have seen nothing in the published reports of the robbery which in my opinion warrant you in deliberately accusing the gentleman referred to of neglecting duty; and secondly, as he is under suspension pending enquiries how far he may have transgressed, your remarks appear to be ill-timed as they are injudicious, for no one knows -better than you, sir, that observations upon a matter sub judicr, as it were, are a breach of the usual journalistic rule. Moreover, the Government arc, or ought to be, quite capable of dealing with the question, and deciding it on its merits ; aud the public prints should, I respectfully submit, wait the decision before referring to the subject. I write these lines on behalf of a gentleman who, although under a cloud, is aud always has been universally respected and admired, as much for his private qualities as for the manner in which he has hitherto discharged his public duties ; and 1 feel supe that your imud good sense will dictate tha|; he should have the utmost fair play in this hrs “hour of need.” I enclose my card, and remain Yours, &c., Fair Flaw Dunedin, August 31.
