THE SOCIAL MEETING AT PORT CHALMERS.
To the Editor of the Evening Star. SIR, —In last nights issue appeared a letter signed ‘ Scrutator,” jeering at a happy evening spent in establishing an Episcopal Churchin this place, now if '‘S” was present he wore a false face, for not one face but smiled with pleasure, and even those kind creatures who had the task of waiting on the rest met you at every turn with a happy smile. “ S.” says the Church will be or rather appears a freak of Nature withmß» a head. He forgets that Christ is the the Church, and the rev. gentleman only spoke of a temporal head for earthly government. Now as to Mr Bull’s truthful compliment, that the Wesleyan Church is a daughter of the English Church, “ S.” is notjoolhardy enough to deny that, but tries to make sport of Mr Bull’s name not worth noticing, only that gentleman so kindly accepted the invitation, and attended the meeting, seeing it was for the glory of God and the good of His Church. As for the opinion of Mr Johnstone, the Presbyterian Minister, it is the opinion ot many thousands beside him that the disestablishment of the Irish Chui’ch would he for its benefit. As for the revision of the Bible, if he and numbers of those who think as he thinks see their salvation in the good old book may they not enjoy their opinion without the slur of “S. ” If “S.” thinks there was anything light or frothy in the members of the English Church in their efforts to obtain a church to worship God in, according to the form of their baptism, he knows little of the spirit that dwelli in the descendants of those who suffered at the stake for their form of religion.
