PORT CHALMERS.

[from our own correspondent.]

The bitter cold, penetrating rain, and bail last evening might have damped the ardour but failed to quench the enthusiasm of the people of Port Chalmers from publicly maim testing their approbation of the noble conduct and persevering energy of our worthy Superintendent during the present session. In addition to the marks of respect paid during the day between- the hours of eight and ten. rockets pierced the air from every conceivable angle of the town illuminating the sky with their brilliancy. Blue lights were burnt in different parts of the port a salute of three guns fired from -he bra:« howitzer at the end. of the jetty, the loud reports of which were' closely followed by hearty cheering. Had it not been for the inclemency of the weather, doubtless the demonstration would have been much greater and its organisation more complete, but under the adverse circumstances, it caii leave no reasonable doubt as to the mind of the people, who are well aware that the opponents of the rights of Otago, armed with power and influence and actuated byinte*. rested motives, have offered no slight oppositiqp to measures that woulc] tenc(. to progress of Otago. Under those adverse circumstances, obstacles that might have daun : ted a man of less stamina, have had to be moved afid arguments of great force overcome, well may the people of Otago be justly proud of the bkvu who has so bravely led the forlorg

hope and stormed the breach in the face of so many difficulties, and in acknowledging the courage and patient self-derfial of the leader, be not forgetful in according the meed of praise so justly due to those members who have supported him in the hour of danger.
