To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sin, —As it is definitely fixed for the commencement' of the Port Chalmers Rail? way on Monday next, and seeing that it is the first work of the kind ever attempted in the Province, 1 think that* it* would not be out of place for his Honor the Deputy Super? intendeut to inaugurate the event by turn? ing the first sod in accordance with the usual custom in such cases, I trust, sir, that you will use influence through your paper to get some such public demonstration on the com* mencement of a work which will be so great a boon to the province when completed.
