("FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) Clyde, August 24. The case against MacLennon was brought before the Court yesterday, when the informer Rennie and two witnesses were examined. Rennie’s evidence was very strong against the accused. The Resident Magistrate, Mr Pyke, adjourned the further hearing to Friday next. / Wellington, August 24. In the House of Representatives last night, Mr Torrens’s Act was read a O ' second time. It is sure to pass. Mr Macandrew’s San Francisco steam resolutions were accepted in Committee of the whole House. ’iSsJlJr Macandrew’s resolutions in re 4hc San Francisco service were carried last night without a division. Port Chalmers is to be made the terminus. The mail steamer in going from Auckland is not to exceed one hundred hours ; and the cost of the service is not to exceed L 40,000, The debate lasted four hours.
" " .Hokitika, August 24. There was a public meeting last night at the Town Hall. It was thronged A resolution to annex that part of the County south of Tereraakau to Otago was carried. A petition to the House of Representatives to that effect was carried. Telegrams from Mr Macandrew were read respecting the basis of representation in the Otago Provincial Council. Those proposed by Westland were considered fair—viz. : Representation to be proportionate to the population of the places ; and that Otago would treat Westland in every respect the same as other portions of the Province. Nothing definite could be done without the concurrence of the Otago Provincial Council. It was suggested that a Permissive Act be passed this session.
