BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
(from our own correspondent.) Wellington, Aug. 18. The New Zealand University Bill has fallen a sacrifice to Canterbury s jealousy of Otago. The opposition was led by Mr Rolleston, and the Bill was emasculated in Committee by the casting vote of the chairman. The Bill was withdrawn. Mr Mcrvyn, the member for Manuherikia, voted with the opposition, and Messrs Main, Reynolds, O’Neill, Driver, Graham, and Rich were absent. The petition against the Bill was headed by the Bishop of Canterbury. Otago must now hang on its own 1 looks. Mr Macandrcw has received a telegram from the Secretary of the Westland Annexation League, who states that the League is desirous that Westland should be united to Otago. Mr Macandrcw is quite prepared to entertain the question, and to enter into negotiations. The Otago members are favorable to the proposal.
