SLY-GROG SELLING.

To the Editor of the Evening Stqr. “ The creature’s at his dirty work again.” — lhulihras. Sm, —Without further introduction, I at once unhesitatiiigl}' avow myself as a decided opponent of sly-grog selling, and disclaim any sympathy with "men who are found violating the law in this particular. But still (notwithstanding the remarks reported as falling from the Bench yesterday) I cannot divest my mind of the impression that the present system of espionage resorted to by some of the police is at least disreputable, if not disgraceful. Is it possible, sir, that with such a well-disciplined force aa wo possess—a force the theme of admiration in all the other Provinces—is it possible, I ask, that men of sufficient intelligence and sagacity cannot be found to sustain the office of detective without resorting to the constant employment of a hireling, whose residence under such circumstance! would not be tolerated in an English town ? Picture to yourself, Mr Editor, the grand and noble sight of a police officer following in the track of an informer, read}' to pounce on his unsuspecting victim whom the mercenary hypocrite is seeking to entrap in his meshes ! This is a portrait I beg respectfully to submit to the Commissioner, and ask is that a system calculated to raise the force in public estimation ? Let the widow in a recent case, and the cries of her fatherless children sound the reply. I am, &c., An Englishman. August 16.
