BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
[from our own correspondent.] Wellington, August 3. In the House of Representatives last night, the Government brought down Bills giving effect to their financial policy. On the Defence Bill an acrimonious discussion took place, headed by Mr Gillies. Considerable opposition was shown in the debate, and to test the state of parties in the House, the Government whip called for a division, with the following result:—4B for the Government, to 7 against. As the Immigration and Public Works Bill had not been circulated, it was, at the request of Mr Stafford, adjourned till to-morrow. The Representation resolutions were carried, giving an extra member to Auckland Province, and one to Westland.
