James Hennan was fined 20s, with the alternative of three days’imprisonment; and George Matheaon was sent to gaol for a month for being a habitual drunkard ; Jas. Ford was fined os, TIIKFT. Jaxues Bowden was charged with stealing a sheet. It appeared from the evidence that Constable Anderson this morning found the prisoner in a watercloset at the rear of the Cricketers’ Arms Hotel, Briuees street south,

with the sheet tied rounthTlim. Being unable to give an account of himself ho was locked up. Enquiries led to the ideutific .‘ion of the article by a Mrs Carlyon, who had hong it and other articles ou her clothes line the previous evening to dry, all of which were missing. Prisoner was sent to gaol fo. a month. OFFENCES AGAINST THE EYE-LAWS. William Shedden was charged with allowing a horse to stray. The Magistrate held that hy the fact of the defendant havin'.paid the impounding fees he came within the rule of law that no one could be twice punished for the same offence, and dismissed the case. George Shannon, for leaving a horse and dray unattended, was fined 10s and costs ; and George Elliot, for having no light to his dray, was lined os. A charge of neglecting to keep a light burning over budding materials in Manor place, preferred against Wm. Silverton, was dismissed.
