Tins Day. The Speaker took the chair at two o’clock. After some notices of question and motion had been given, the House went into Committee of Supply on the Supplementary Estimates. The Secretary to the Superintendent was voted LSO ; Goldfields, LfiOO ; Education, L4OO for music master. A discussion ensued, iu which some objection was made to the vote. It was explained that his duties had been interfered with on account of acting as Inspector of Schools, and that had it not been for Unit, he would have visited 4very school district in the Province in fifteen months. On the question being put, the Committee divided. For the morion, 12; against it, 9.—On the sum of LSO for a watchman at the Post Office, it was stated by Air Turnbull that inconvenience was experienced through the Post being closed at eight o’clock instead of closing at ten o’clock. It was explained by Mr Keyuolds that it was the interest of the Province to appoint a watchman at LSO a year rather than run the risk of having an officer appointed by the General Government at double the amount. The vote was passed, and also L3OO for the University Chair of Mineralogy and Agricultural Chemistry; L5,0l)0 was voted for supplemented roads. — On the item Dunedin Corporation L 2,000 being called, the Committee divided, with the following result: —Ayes, l(i; uoes, 7. Port Chalmers Corporation, LI 30 ; Hampden Mechanics Institute, LIOO.
