THE GAS QUESTION.
To the Editor of the Ereniny Star. Sin,—The leader in yesterday’s Times i s one of the usual milk and water articles which from time to time grace the columns of that journal, so that people are beginning to be callous whether or not the leading journal should even favor the public with a leading article. The Editor of this journal endeavours to mystify and complicate the present position of the Corporation in the eyes of the public, by degrees blowing hot and then cold. Why does not the Editor take a hold stand upon a principle and say Yes or No—there shall be gas works belonging to the City, or advise tho propriety of entering into a new contract for a few years, as by that time the Municipality of Dunedin will be financially in a very different position ? Is the Editor not aware that the City Councillors are only striving to do their best to elicit public opinion upon a subject involving an outlay of thousands of pounds ? No doubt public opinion on this as on many other important matters might have been elicited at the next election for Mayor which occurs outlie 2lst July proximo, but a majority of the Council ruled otherwise, and if the citizens are dissatisfied with the action of the councillors they will shortly have an opportunity of showing their dissatisfaction by tlieir not returning four of the councillors who retire by efliuxiou of time. Really, sir, the tactics of the Daily Times, have been lately so erratic that people are beginning to ask themselves who is (responsible for the many incoherent ambiguous articles which appear from time to time in the leading journal. Ratepayer.
