THE HOLIDAY.

For the first time in four years we have had really line weather on the anniversary of Her Majesty’s birthday. There can be little wonder, then, that most persons took advantage of the holiday to go pleasureseeking. What with steamboat excursions, picnics, and the races, a large number of persons must have gone out of town. The Golden Ago took a good many excursionists to Portohello and Port Chalmers, and many visited the Port in company with the boats of the Yacht Club. One of the prominent features of the day’s amusements was THE VOEUNTEER PARADE. The Volunteers assembled in front of the Custom House at nfne o’clock. After performing a number of evolutions the usual feu dc jvh was lired, the Artillery between the rounds firing seven rounds from their Armstrongs, and the battalion band playing the national anthem. At the conclusion of the parade Major Bathgate presented the district prizes, complimenting the men on their appearance and their position in the late colonial ride contest. He impressed on officers the necessity of improvement in judging distance drill on the part of the men, and on the latter the necessity for assiduity, in their ride practice otherwise they' would find some of the other provinces occupying the premier position in shooting.
