MACASSEY v. MASSEY AND ANOTHER.

To the Editor of the Ecwniny Star. Sir —As one of the taxpayers of the City, I must say that the action taken by Mr Maeassey against the Corporation to defend his offended dignity, appears to me somewhat harsh, True the above-named gentleman iffay have a fancied or; real grievance to complain of, inasmuch' W tiye ’baijiff Goldman did act somewhat rudely in demanding the payment of his rates. In this Goodman’s conduct is nnjustiflabie. Would it not then have been more commendable on the part of Mr Maeassey to have written to the Mayor, complaining of Goodman’s want or courtesy or civility, than to have rushed into law? Law may bp a cheap commodity to some men/ but 'to the citizens of Dmfedip, in the present state of the" Corporation ijnqmcos, the subject assumes' a very different complexion, I fipd no fault wffh the ruling of Judge Chapman, but ] do believe that

no jury in Dunedin would give a Verdict against the Corporation on so paltry a plea. It may be satisfactory to the mind of some men that they are .the redreflsers of public wrongs, but then it is necessary that such individuals must themselves be like Caesar's wife, above suspision. Trusting Mr Macassey will consider bis injured dignity by the decision of the Bench sufficiently compensated.—l am, &c., Horatio.
